If the keypad numbers on your Schlage Encode Series (models BE489, BE499, FE789) don’t light up when you press the lock icon, this behavior is normal and part of the lock’s design. Here’s how the lock icon functions and why the keypad numbers may not illuminate in certain situations:
Understanding the Lock Icon Functionality
1. When the Lock is Unlocked
- Pressing the lock icon (located in the lower right-hand corner of the keypad) will not light up the keypad numbers. Instead, it will operate the deadbolt and extend the bolt to lock the door.
- A blue checkmark will appear on the keypad to confirm the bolt has been fully extended.
2. When the Lock is Already Locked
- If the door is already locked, pressing the lock icon will not light up the keypad numbers. Instead, the lock will display a blue checkmark, indicating the lock is already in the locked position.
- The keypad numbers will not illuminate in this state.
How to Illuminate the Keypad
To illuminate the keypad numbers, press the home icon located in the lower left-hand corner of the keypad. This will activate the backlight for the keypad, making it easier to see and enter access codes in low-light conditions.
