Schlage Keyed Entry - F51: How to Swap Handing
Locate the Emergency Pin tool included with your lock. It is a piece of wire with a loop at one end.
Removing the Interior Lever:
- Find the small hole in the stem of the interior lever.
- Insert the pin wrench into this hole.
- Apply pressure to depress the spring retainer inside the lever.
- While pressing, pull the lever away from the stem to remove it.
Removing the Exterior Lever:
- Insert the key into the exterior lock cylinder.
- Turn the key to the vertical position.
- Insert the pin wrench into the hole on the exterior lever stem.
- Apply pressure to depress the spring retainer.
- Pull the lever away from the stem to remove it.
- Swap the levers side to side to reverse the handing of the lock.
- Push each lever back onto the stem to secure the levers.

- Swap the levers side to side to reverse the handing of the lock.
- Push each lever back onto the stem to secure the levers.
Schlage Encode Lever
- Locate the Circular Opening
Find the small circular opening on the stem of the lever. This is where you’ll insert the 9-pin tool or paper clip. -
Insert the key into the exterior lock cylinder.
Turn the key to the vertical position. -
Insert the 9-pin Tool
Insert the 9-pin tool (or paper clip) into the circular opening. -
Press the Pin
Push the pin inward until you feel the lever release from the stem. -
Remove the Lever
Once the pin is pressed, pull the lever toward yourself, away from the door, to remove it. -
Repeat for the Other Side
Repeat the same process on the opposite lever to remove it from the door. -
Reinstall the Levers
With both levers removed, place each lever on the correct side of the door to match the desired handing. Once the levers are lined up, press or push them into place. You should hear a click, indicating that the lever has been secured properly. To confirm, gently pull on the lever to ensure it is firmly attached.
